College Health Corps, National Kidney Foundation

The National Kidney Foundation, a major voluntary nonprofit health organization, is dedicated to preventing kidney diseases, improving the health of those affected by kidney disease, and increasing the availability of organs for transplantation. Our programs include public awareness and community outreach, community-based kidney screenings, educational events for people with kidney disease, health professional education, peer mentoring and patient support services, research, and political advocacy. NKF’s KEEP Healthy community-based screening program provides free health assessments to identify people who are at high risk for CKD and refer them to needed healthcare services. The CHC VISTA will help to develop, implement and evaluate modified screening strategies to reach new clients through partnerships with other organizations and develop new volunteer recruitment processes to build organizational capacity for this program. The CHC VISTA volunteer may also support NKF’s community outreach program by enhancing our training curriculum for CHWs and other community partners, developing culturally relevant education materials for the public, and training new volunteers and community partners to do CKD education and outreach. You must have a valid driver's license. ---This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program, operated by Minnesota Campus Compact. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, food, and basic needs through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations. Professional development focuses on health equity, the social determinants of health, and effective partnership development. --- ***Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor. Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***

Member Duties : Increased screening and early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease is greatly needed, especially among low-income and racially diverse communities. The VISTA will work on projects aimed to help us build capacity within our KEEP Healthy (Kidney Early Evaluation Program) community-based kidney screening program and community outreach efforts. The VISTA will conduct program evaluation of past KEEP Healthy programs, as well as develop new versions of the program, specifically for use in partnership with colleges and universities. In addition, the VISTA will work on other quality improvement projects related to the KEEP Healthy and community outreach programs, as well as securing grants and funding to support the program. The VISTA will build a number of useful public health skills including program evaluation, data collection, volunteer training, partnership development and grant writing.
