These positions are available in the Buffalo/Metro area. There are opportunities in Erie County. The AmeriCorps member will learn and participate in the role of Deaf Community Services Assistant (DCSA) and will be a member of the Deaf Access Services team involved with outreach and human services to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities in WNY. The DCSA will serve under the daily guidance of the Community Services Navigator and will meet from time to time with the Executive Director in order to have exposure to the organizational leadership. Generally, service duties will be conducted during daytime hours but on occasion there may be evening or weekend expectations, particularly related to community outreach. There is a goal to develop and operationalize a Deaf volunteer program. Members for this service opportunity should be a military veteran or family member, or have a disability, and be economically disadvantaged (Eligible for TANF, SNAP, SCHIP, Section 8 Housing, Medicaid, or have a poor credit score, or be at least 60 days behind on one or more family bills)

Member Duties : The DCSA will learn skills to teach DEAF and HARD OF HEARING clients to use self-advocacy techniques and will become familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act. They will also gain awareness of basic social work principles and methods for helping people address their barriers to independence in the community. There will be a need to develop relationships with other service provides for the purpose of expanding access. The position will require a high level of American Sign Language. The DCSA will engage in activities with and on behalf of community groups and clients to empower, educate and facilitate access to mainstream services that otherwise wouldn’t be possible due to language and cultural barriers.
