CCE Oneida - CCNYPA

One World Garden is designed to be a place that speaks to all of Utica, NY - those with deep roots in its immigration and settlement history and those among its newest arrivals and refugee population. On one hand, its garden elements will communicate coming together. On the other, its elements will honor and celebrate individuality, difference, strength, courage, and resilience and form that part of the one world message that reminds us of what it takes for life to renew, endure and flourish even in the face of great adversity. The One World Garden Cultural Center will celebrate diversity, inclusion and share the stories of cultural roots, foster a more pluralist and equitable community and make arts and culture a primary driver of education experiences emphasizing creativity, human expression, STEAM, innovation and the community’s rich ‘tapestry’ of artists and cultural traditions. In so doing will provide opportunities for cognitive development, educational achievement, social development entrepreneurship and stable employment for low-income as well as at-risk youth, juveniles, and adults. This VISTA site is hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County (CCE Oneida). Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.

Member Duties : Join the Rust2Green Team in the creation of the One World Garden Cultural Center Action Plan. Our VISTA will focus on the development and delivery of an innovative OWG Cultural Center Action Plan emphasizing arts and culture education, expression and empowerment and created with a team of diverse partner as a coalition. The coalition will be inclusive of groups, organizations, institutions, and individual engaging arts, culture, education, poverty alleviation, youth empowerment, and community- development while serving or representing low-income populations including youth, artist, creative minorities and foreign-born. This will advance the goal of One World Garden as it breaks ground in late 2019 as a new park in a city that’s home to a very diverse population in an area of a primary high percentage of people and children living in poverty.
