University of Pittsburgh - Basic Needs - CCNYPA

Recent studies in the Pittsburgh region conducted by The University of Pittsburgh and Point Park University have noted that 21% of local college students lack “regular, fixed access to housing” and that 29% of local students identify as food insecure, lacking access to nutritious and affordable food. What has also become apparent to the regional higher education community is that food and housing security are crucial indicators of post-secondary success but they are only a small part of the whole that college students need to succeed and thrive on campus. The purpose of the AmeriCorps VISTA position is to evaluate and address basic needs insecurities in current and incoming college students. During the 2019-2020 academic year the VISTA will engage in the following activities: Conducting a quantitative assessment of current students' needs and efficiency/effectiveness of available resources; conducting a needs assessment of the Pittsburgh region via local non-profit and government organizations working with low-income and at-risk youth; and developing an asset map of the regional community partners and University departments to better serve at-risk populations. These tasks are merely the first part of a process to address the basic needs of students in post-secondary education. The VISTA will be empowered to work with community and campus partners to forge a Basic Needs Framework, creating a comprehensive resource net to ensure all students have the information to access resources and services that meet their food, housing, health, and financial wellness needs on and off-campus. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
