Penn State Brandywine - CCNYPA

Penn State University’s Pathway to Success (PaSSS) program serves students who are first generation, Pell Grant eligible, and/or from historically underrepresented groups. The cohort-based program is designed to keep students on track toward graduation by providing discounted tuition for summer courses, faculty mentors, co-curricular activities and additional funding through on-campus and community-based employment. There are typically 25 students in a cohort, and they begin the program the summer before their first year, take a required course together during the fall, and remain in the program through the summer after their first year of college. The AmeriCorps VISTA project will increase greatly increase the capacity of the PaSSS program and the Penn State Brandywine Center for Ethics and Civic Engagement (CECE) to collaboratively develop job training provided to our PaSSS students and to place them with community partners committed to their development. Currently, PaSSS students are only offered campus-based employment opportunities. The VISTA will evaluate the employment component of the program, develop work training processes for our PaSSS students and collaborate with CECE to build community partnerships, program policies, and off-campus placement sites for our students. Ideally, PaSSS students will transition from off-campus PaSSS jobs to community-based federal work study placements run through CECE. With the added support of a VISTA, PaSSS students will not only receive funding to address the financial challenges of attending college but will also gain professional experiences in support of their future career objectives. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year.
