Millersville University - Education - CCNYPA

The SoWe Support VISTA Project provides support to the residents, families, and children of the SouthWest (SoWe) community of Lancaster and JW Price Elementary School. This project will increase the capacity of the SouthWest Neighborhood Leadership Board (SWNLB) and the Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) to implement neighborhood revitalization strategies outlined in the SouthWest Lancaster Neighborhood Revitalization initiative, specifically in the area of education and PreK-5th grade school-readiness and success. SoWe Lancaster’s residents and partners have embarked upon a course of action to stem the tide of disinvestment, to create a neighborhood that is safe, clean, and attractive to economic investment, with schools that offer high-quality learning environments and supportive services so that every student can attain success. The project will positively impact PreK-5th grade educational outcomes in the SoWe neighborhood by increasing parent participation in home and school groups, increasing the participation of local businesses in school programs, and by increasing attendance at back to school nights, parent-teacher conferences, and other school programming. Additionally, the VISTA member will deepen the University’s partnership with the SoWe Lancaster Revitalization initiative by connecting Millersville University student volunteers and faculty experts to the SoWe task forces that are implementing revitalization strategy action plans. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
