2019-2020 Centro Hispano Garden Coordinator VISTA

In the midst of one of the most cultural diverse neighborhoods in Madison, you will find Centro Hispano, one of the largest non-profits serving the ever changing Latino community for more than 30 years. Centro's goal is to improve the quality of life for Latinos and others living in Dane County by empowering youth, strengthening families, and engaging the community. This VISTA will support improved community health by serving in a capacity-building role for Centro Hispano around food, culture, and community engagement. The goal of this position will be to help maintain Centro Hispano’s garden program and work with partners and Centro staff to develop a sustainable garden program plan. The Centro Hispano garden is a learning lab for many Centro Hispano’s community wellness activities. Its purpose is to serve as a space for all those who want to learn and teach about food, health, conservation, and agriculture. Given the health disparities within the Latino community, the garden is a vital place to develop both community inclusion and skills for reducing the physical, mental, and financial burdens that result from negative health outcomes This VISTA will seek to bring together the garden project with other programs at Centro such as the Youth Programs, Community Engagement and El Mercadito (Centro’s Farmer’s Market). By working with Centro staff and existing partnerships the VISTA will integrate the garden into other Centro programming in a sustainable capacity.
