2019-2020 Centro Hispano Employment Services VISTA

In the midst of one of the most cultural diverse neighborhoods in Madison, you will find Centro Hispano, one of the largest non-profits serving the ever changing Latino community for more than 30 years. Centro's goal is to improve the quality of life for Latinos and others living in Dane County by empowering youth, strengthening families, and engaging the community. The Workforce VISTA will strengthen and grow Centro’s Camino vocational training programs and develop new services for job seeking clients. Our existing Camino programs have successfully improved retention rates for Latino adults in the workforce. Currently, culturally and linguistically competent soft skill education courses servicing Spanish speaking clientele do not exist in Dane County. With a high Latino unemployment rate in Dane County there remains a significant need for these services. In addition to improving employment opportunities through soft skills, Caminos has provided valuable training in hard skills to program participants. After participating in Caminos training programs 78% of participants have found employment at $15 or more per hour. The Workforce VISTA will build on these past successes, strengthen the program, and directly influence future earnings of Madison’s Latino residents through assistance in finding and securing employment in high wage labor. This will be accomplished by expanding the Camino pathway programs to new fields and improving employment opportunities through the development of aforementioned employment based soft skill courses. This VISTA will also focus on increasing the capacity of the current employer services by creating sustainable infrastructure to manage employer relationships and referral opportunities for Centro Hispano clients and the Latino community in Dane County.
