2019-2020 Centro Hispano Volunteer Coordinator VISTA

In the midst of one of the most cultural diverse neighborhoods in Madison, you will find Centro Hispano, one of the largest non-profits serving the ever changing Latino community for more than 30 years. Centro's goal is to improve the quality of life for Latinos and others living in Dane County by empowering youth, strengthening families, and engaging the community. Through our youth programs -- Juventud (middle school), Escalera (high school), [Re]Generacion -- Centro Hispano focuses on shaping a better life for young Latinos by providing real alternatives and resources to increase graduation rates, and for youth to provide themselves with a brighter future. Our goal is to see Latino youth prepared to succeed in life by finishing high school, entering post-secondary education, and engaging positively in their communities. Centro’s youth programs provide services annually for an estimated 250 youth, grades 6-12 in the Madison Metropolitan School District. Our youth programs are successful because students progress as a cohort, staying with Centro through middle school and high school as they improve their academic performance, graduate on time, and attend college while forging a strong sense of personal identity. Volunteers are a vital component of the success Centro sees with its youth programming. While we rely on skilled volunteers in both our youth and adult programs and services, we are especially dependent on skilled volunteers to support youth enrolled in our school-based programs in their personal and academic growth. In addition, Centro relies on volunteers during special events and fundraising activities. Currently Centro is looking to increase and streamline volunteer recruitment, organization and placement. This VISTA will focus on recruiting and building a community of dedicated volunteers through regular trainings on Centro Hispano, the Latino community and the importance of volunteerism.
