SUNY Geneseo - CCNYPA

RKids Geneseo engages students from diverse backgrounds in a dynamic after school program for youth in grades 3-5 that integrates academic engagement and experiential learning. The VISTA coordinates programming that fosters personal confidence, academic competence, and a lifelong love of learning. RKids works with students from low-income families in the Geneseo Central School District and meets twice weekly, for two hours, on the campus of SUNY Geneseo. The VISTA coordinates tutoring and enrichment programming that broadens and deepens the educational experience of participants, providing opportunities for them to expand their overall educational experience. Volunteers recruited and managed by the VISTA provide one-on-one tutoring in subjects identified as areas of need. The VISTA also curates a wide range of interactive enrichment activities facilitated by student groups and academic departments at SUNY Geneseo, as well as from local community organizations. By providing free educational and enrichment supports RKids helps families move out of poverty and gain access to resources traditionally more accessible to higher-income families. Providing these benefits in a caring, inclusive, and safe environment supports the youth in gaining agency in their own education which will have lasting positive social and economic and impacts on their personal, educational, and professional lives. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
