Susquehanna University - CCNYPA

In partnership with the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way(UW), the VISTA will support the work and impact of the Communities That Care (CTC) coalition and the Susquehanna University Service Leaders Program (SUSL). CTC is an “operating system” that collects local data on risk and protective factors related with substance abuse, school failure and dropout. The coalition identifies 3-5 specific risk and protective factors and seeks programs and strategies to address those priorities. The UW focuses on 2 high-quality after-school programs for K-2nd graders to reach the most at-risk students. SUSLs work directly with these after-school programs. The CTC focuses on older students, so VISTA will focus on the expansion of the afterschool program to include grades 6-8 and assist in coordinating the UW SUSLs. The SUSL program is a four-year internship-like service-learning program. The goal is to impact youth development in the region. Components are reflection, reciprocity and relationships. Students work with a community organization, spending 6-8 hours per week on site for 98 weeks. The overall goal is to reach the most at-risk students (those experiencing poverty related issues including substance abuse, poor academic performance, mental health challenges) in the region. Youth in grades K-3rd and 5-8 will benefit from on-going support through high quality programming that helps meet identified needs through PAYS (Pennsylvania Youth Survey) data. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
