ShareCorps- Community Roots- Farm to School Coordinator
 
 
 
Community Roots uses an abandoned greenhouse nursery and accompanying six acres as the site of community programs that target horticultural, agricultural, and land stewardship programs. We are seeking to: • Support local school science standards (e.g. STEM education goals, etc.) through hands-on nutrition, food science, and food production studies • Support and supplement existing agricultural & horticultural education (eg. 4H, FFA, OSU Extension-Knox) by offering community growing space at little to no cost • Partner with the Knox County Health Department and Creating Healthy Communities (GetHealthy Knox) increasing access to fresh foods • Offer wilderness skill-building programs (e.g. wild seed saving, plant identification) • Provide an outdoor classroom for teachers and community service work space for volunteers and rehabilitation programs in our local court system

Member Duties : Create and complete the USDA Farm to School Planning toolkit by synchronizing a newly formed partnership between participating community organizations. Help develop and coordinate the creation of a plan for creating school gardens, helping the school district procure store, use, and deliver local foods through the school meals, and help develop a classroom curricula for 6 participating teachers (K-12) to use the gardens in their science, technology, engineering, math, and art classrooms.
