CCMA Workforce Training & Development in PG County

Recently, CKAR developed a collaboration with Kaiser Permanente to complete a planning initiative involving workforce development and training as a part of “Future Riverdale”, a place-based initiative. Job readiness and skills development are important to eliminating poverty in a community. Joblessness is one of the socio-determinants of health. Families that face joblessness face economic challenges that cause extreme stress. CKAR and its partners will address workforce training gaps for now and the future throughout the Purple Line corridor and newly accessible areas due to transit development that increases potential for existing residents to benefit from opportunities due to the new transit line. The results of this planning initiative in year one will allow for development and scheduling of workforce programs appropriate for a very diverse population with many challenges. This programming in year one and over the course of three years, will provide experience for a VISTA member in development of training programs, community engagement, connecting community residents with opportunities through programs that address market opportunities and deficits in skills sets with job placement at its core. CKAR is a 501c3 nonprofit community development corporation in Prince George’s County, Maryland. We serve an ethnically diverse population of native and foreign-born residents, documented immigrants, refugees, homeless, veterans, re-entry residents and youth 18-over from multiple communities in Greater Riverdale. These communities have long been burdened by high poverty rates and low environmental quality. The mission of CKAR is to strengthen the Greater Riverdale community through intertwined projects in the areas of workforce development, business support and environmental health, which we believe to be foundational to community resilience.
