CCMA “Affordable Housing in Prince George’s County

CKAR has entered into a collaboration with Kaiser Permanente to develop “Future Riverdale”, a place-based initiative. This program will include efforts to lift those residents in the Riverdale community from poverty and identify housing opportunities to avoid their displacement. Affordable housing is one of the socio-determinants of health and wellness. Without decent and affordable housing, stress factors are increased in families. This program will be supported by Enterprise Community Partners and Maryland Nonprofits. In Future Riverdale, we will complete an economic scan and assessment so that we can focus on creating the appropriate number of affordable housing units spread in communities along the Purple Line corridor. The program will involve the collection of data and analysis to complete a community assessment; conducting research to find precedents for outreach by volunteers; and evaluation of the effectiveness of current outreach mechanisms. An important part of the program is community participation. Therefore, this program involves the identification of volunteers from community meetings to engage the community and expand outreach where and when needed. Development of a thriving community begins with listening to the community. This program will provide students with community organizing, participation and outreach skills useful in their careers in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Finally, the program includes advocacy efforts to ensure that developers include amenities in housing proposals to meet the needs of the community. CKAR is a 501c3 community development corporation in Prince George’s County, Maryland. We serve an ethnically diverse population of native and foreign-born residents, documented immigrants, refugees, homeless, veterans, re-entry residents and youth 18-over from multiple communities in Greater Riverdale. These communities have long been burdened by high poverty rates, second-tier businesses and inadequate housing.
