Messiah College - CCNYPA

With over 10,000 refugees recently resettling in the Harrisburg region, this VISTA project will work closely with local refugee and immigrant communities to research, develop and implement initiatives that increase job access, readiness, and employment success. The project will primarily work with Catholic Charities and include conducting community needs assessments, developing programs related to job access and readiness, and increasing and diversifying employment opportunities. This initial year of the VISTA project will involve (1) gleaning input from the community on specific barriers to job access and readiness through interviews and focus groups; (2) analyzing gathered data; (3) designing, piloting and assessing 1-2 programs to meet identified barriers. The VISTA will also work closely with the Messiah College Agape Center to connect college programs, faculty, and students to the research and program development. They will also educate the campus on issues facing refugees and immigrants as well as implement initiatives related to college/job access that connect the college community to the local refugee and immigrant community. While Catholic Charities serves as the primary partner, information-gathering and program development will also support the work of the PA Center for Refugees and Immigrants in Mechanicsburg as both organizations are working with similar populations to achieve similar goals. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
