Misericordia University - CCNYPA

Eighteen years ago, Misericordia University recognized the need for a program that would support single mothers in continuing their education beyond high school and began the Ruth Matthews Bourger Women with Children Program (WWC). Misericordia launched WWC after surveys conducted in the surrounding region indicated that single mother households in the area are the largest demographic of families living in poverty, with little chance of improving their situation due to a lack of any education beyond high school or the failure to complete degree requirements started before they became mothers. The VISTA with our program will prove vital in helping the WWC Coordinator and Director with program development including informational outreach, case management, food insecurity initiatives, and family engagement as we continue to grow and demand for the program increases. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.

The WWC VISTA will develop a sustainable marketing and educational outreach program that will increase capacity and outreach numbers throughout the region.
