Community Assessment VISTA

RISC builds a powerful community of people from racially, religiously, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds to address root-level causes of injustice in the Greater Richmond Region. RISC empowers community leaders to gather their neighbors and call for systemic changes that affect their everyday lives. Since 2002, RISC leaders have achieved significant changes in housing, healthcare, job training, and education. The Community Assessment VISTA will play an important role in building RISC’s capacity to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged individuals in Richmond through leadership development. Help measure the effectiveness of RISC’s anti-poverty programming and improve participant-led research methods. Your work will have a direct effect on RISC’s ability to successfully address housing, education, and child welfare in the Richmond region this year. If you have skills or experience in qualitative research methods, leadership, non-profit management, and/or teamwork, we’d love to meet you! RISC serves the City of Richmond, Henrico County, and Chesterfield County. The AmeriCorps VISTA program provides benefits including a living allowance, childcare assistance, choice of education award or stipend, health coverage, relocation allowance, and training. VISTA members at RISC also receive transportation assistance and may participate in national community organizing workshops. VISTA members must be 18 years old; be US Citizens, nationals, or legal residents; and successfully complete a criminal background check. VISTA is a full-time, one-year commitment. Political advocacy, organizing or demonstration while on VISTA duty, or while perceived to be on duty, is prohibited. Access to a personal car or public transportation is recommended. VISTA service term begins June 13, 2019 and ends June 12, 2020. To apply, send a resume to Abbie Larink, RISC Lead Organizer, at riscorg@gmail.com, with the subject line “Community Assessment VISTA”.

Member Duties : As a VISTA member at RISC you will help end poverty by measuring the effectiveness of RISC’s anti-poverty programming and responsiveness to community needs, and by improving participant-led research. During your service term, you will assess RISC’s problem study groups, performance measurement, and community assessment practices. You will have the opportunity to develop assessments and improve program evaluation; update community assessment results to monitor pressing challenges; and assist RISC participants to incorporate results into service delivery. You will improve research methods by expanding partnerships with field experts and engaging participants in literature reviews and strategy development. Finally, you will play a crucial role in training RISC leaders to communicate results with stakeholders.
