ShareCorps- Worthington Resource Pantry-Outreach Coordinator

The Worthington Resource Pantry is more than a food pantry. We’re a resource center that educates, feeds, and comforts people who need a helping hand during rough economic times. We are committed to building a healthy community with access to fresh, healthy food choices. We engage our community by serving our neighbors, and by providing them with opportunities to serve one another. Our neighbors receive about a week’s worth of food a month if they visit our choice pantry two times during the month. In addition, neighbors can access additional food from the pantry through our Produce and Bread distribution, held on two or three Saturdays a month. Beyond providing food to our neighbors, our dedicated Resource Center volunteers provide information about other community resources that could make neighbors’ lives easier. The pantry also sponsors educational programs, provides food demonstrations, and hosts representatives from service providers in the community who speak to neighbors about their programs. During the summer, we sponsor a summer lunch program so that once school lets out, children in our community have a place to eat lunch and to participate in fun activities. We also partner with another community organization to ensure that kids have food over the weekend during the summer. The Worthington Resource Pantry’s service area covers 96 square miles where 20% of Franklin County’s population resides. We serve as the safety net for families in our service area. While at first glance, people do not expect to see a pantry in a suburban community, the fact is that suburban poverty is growing at a faster rate than urban poverty. Because of this reality, the Worthington Resource Pantry is an important part of the fabric of our area. During our ten year history, our community has supported us and has enabled us to serve growing numbers of people each and every year.

Member Duties : Research needs in the underserved neighborhoods of the Worthington Resource Pantry service area, and develop programs and projects to enable the people living in these areas to access the pantry. Develop educational program materials that can be easily translated and distributed for families who have a need but who have not previously participated in hunger relief programs so that these families can receive food and services. Partner with existing community organizations to identify additional opportunities within our service area to provide food to more people. Coordinate with other community groups to facilitate expanded programming of summer lunch and weekend food programs for kids. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with lots of energy for engaging other organizations in order to better meet the needs of the community.
