ShareCorps - Oberlin Community Service Council- Food Justice

Oberlin Community Services is a dynamic emergency social service organization that serves residents of Lorain County who struggle to meet basic needs. OCS offers client services to counsel, make referrals and assist with rent, prescriptions, gas, and utilities. We also offer numerous food and sustainability programs. Founded in 1955, OCS is one of the largest social safety net agencies in the area. Operated by a small, talented and dedicated staff, OCS thrives in a vibrant, energetic, supportive team environment. We work hard, and have fun! Our emergency food services include a weekly choice food pantry, a community garden, free farmers markets, Meals on Wheels, a large monthly food distribution, holiday food distributions, and targeted services for youth and seniors. Through the choice food pantry, OCS provides individualized hunger support by meeting varied dietary needs, by offering a wealth of fresh fruits and vegetables, by providing four full day’s worth of food to each household served, and by offering nutritious pre-prepared meals. OCS’s food program also includes larger projects aimed at building a local food network in Lorain County, shifting the food system, and reducing food waste. These projects include a food rescue program, which partners with large organizations to flash freeze and reuse prepared food that would otherwise be thrown away, and a garden access program called Build-A-Garden that offers free gardening materials and educational opportunities to Lorain County residents interested in learning how to grow their own food. We are dedicated to expanding and adjusting our food programming over the next few years in order to offer greater flexibility, to serve needs more fully, and to advocate for food access, justice, and sustainability. In order to consider taking on additional food programming, OCS must ensure that we have the necessary institutional capacity and that our existing programs are well supported and soundly structured.
