Bucknell - CCNYPA

The Growing Change VISTA program will foster healthy futures through building community capacity for initiatives that promote local food security and health in the distressed coal towns of Mount Carmel and Shamokin. Bucknell University’s Coal Region Field Station (CRFS), founded in 2015 and headquartered in Mount Carmel in partnership with the Mother Maria Kaupas Center for volunteerism and community service (MMKC), supports development of collaborative university-community projects. A cluster of collaborative projects have emerged around food access and insecurity; however, community partners often lack capacity to sustain projects. The VISTA will develop effective strategies for building and sustaining community capacity in local food access and education initiatives that involve young people, working with the support of MMKC and Anthracite Region for Progress (ARP). Projects include supporting and growing community gardening, strengthening food pantry networks, and related programming, such as nutrition education in the Mount Carmel and Shamokin areas. The volunteer will work with a range of community stakeholders including local government, business leaders, non-profit organizations, public schools, K-12 students, and residents. Through Growing Change, the VISTA will contribute to positive health and community impacts from specific projects, as well as contributing to long-term poverty reduction by engaging youth in extracurricular activities with adult mentors, known to contribute to positive life-long impacts including reduced poverty. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
