Addressing Ohio’s Opioid Epidemic

Ohio is “ground zero” for the opioid epidemic. In the face of this crisis, The Ohio State University is marshaling resources across its full breadth to find solutions to prevent, treat and aid in recovery from opioid addiction. Our goal is to strengthen state, county and community efforts to combat the opioid epidemic in Franklin County and beyond. The Ohio State University is the state’s land grant institution with a presence in all 88 counties, including our Extension offices. As a top-ranked research university with an academic health center, fifteen colleges including seven health sciences colleges, and located in Columbus, the capital of and largest city in Ohio, Ohio State is well positioned to be a central figure in local and state efforts to address the spectrum of issues contributing to and resulting from opioid addiction. This position will help to staff both the University and its Wexner Medical Center opioid steering committees and other applicable groups and task forces, research and evaluate ongoing efforts, and assist in the development of community and state partnerships. This will require writing educational materials and papers related to opioid addiction, researching and evaluating grants and other opportunities to improve assessment and treatment of opioid addiction, collaborating with community partners to identify social determinants of health interventions, working to sustain our opioid quality initiatives, and engaging with state agencies on joint efforts to develop programs throughout Ohio.
