ShareCorps - WIN - Community Development and Food Access

Working In Neighborhoods’ mission is “to empower people to make informed choices for themselves and their neighborhoods through community building, home ownership, and economic learning.” Founded in 1978, WIN has built a strong reputation for developing resident leadership and supporting community-led efforts to revitalize Cincinnati neighborhoods through transparent, equitable, grassroots redevelopment. South Cumminsville/Millvale is a predominantly African American neighborhood located in Cincinnati's lower Mill Creek Valley, a heavily industrialized zone packed with transportation and water management infrastructure, industrial land, and older residential housing. The community's median household income is less than $14,000 per year, and it has been designated as a “food desert” by the Cincinnati Health Department. However, residents are actively engaged in the Community Council and neighborhood planning and redevelopment efforts and have maintained a home ownership rate of more than 50 percent. With WIN's help, South Cumminsville residents are working to expand access to fresh healthy food, and improve the environment and quality of life in their neighborhood.
