The Tool Library is a resource 1,488 individuals throughout Franklin Co. use to obtain the tools and knowledge needed to maintain their homes. Of those that have reported income, 25% are low-income (less than 50% AMI), while 23% are extremely low-income (less than 30% AMI). The Tool Library provides: 1) The knowledge to repair a leaky toilet instead of hiring a plumber for homeowners with tight budgets. 2) Renters in section 8 housing with the lawn mowers to keep within expectations of their programs. 3) Community gardens with the rototillers needed to bring fresh food to food deserts. Many members are learning tool-use skills for the first time. According to Dr. Malcolm Knowles, researcher in adult learning, adults remember 20% of what they hear, 40% of what they see and hear and 80% of that they do. Our Tool Library staff provides as much knowledge as they can, however many of those tips or tricks are forgotten once the member returns home. This project teaches skills that empower members to become more self-sufficient and save money. It provides members with better knowledge of the tools, becoming better stewards of the Tool Library and decreasing the expense of tools damaged due to misuse.

Member Duties : The VISTA will create an educational component members can use after they leave the Tool Library, teaching how to safely use tools, make simple repairs and be good stewards of Tool Library property. They will accomplish this by: 1) Adding or creating instructional videos on how to properly use tools and projects the tools can be used for. 2) Creating QR codes to be placed on tools, allowing members to link directly to those videos once they are home. 3) Creating communication resources that also educate on how to use YouTube and QR codes. 4) Developing the best methods of distributing the information to our diverse membership and community. 5) Creating an evaluation form to track involvement and feedback. 6) Revising the procedural and training staff on the new development.
