ShareCorps-Oberlin Community Services-Food Sustainability

“Start by doing what is necessary. And then do what is possible. Soon you will be doing the impossible.” Such is Oberlin Community Services (OCS)’s approach to working toward our vision: a thriving, sustainable community where everyone can flourish. Founded in 1955, OCS is a responsive, community-based organization that offers food programs, direct financial assistance, advocacy, referrals, and educational outreach to people who have difficulty, for whatever reason, making ends meet. In addition to providing 37,000 points of service through our established food programs, OCS offers mobile produce pantries and food delivery to the homebound in southern Lorain County. Our Food Rescue Program reroutes 20,000 pounds of food out of the waste stream and into the homes of those at risk for hunger. In 2019, OCS received an award from Second Harvest of Northeast Ohio for our innovative food programming; these include our garden and garden programs, which continue to grow and flourish, increasing constituents’ access to fresh produce. OCS also offers direct financial assistance to people who seek help making ends meet, and educational programming to foster resiliency in those who live at 200% of poverty or less.

Member Duties : As the Food Sustainability Associate, you will increase the access of low- and no-income community members to ample fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables and promote sustainable gardening as a life-enhancing endeavor. You will build the capacity of garden camps, workshops, and other educational events; you will engage community members, creating a network of support between gardeners past, present, and future; you will track and analyze data, create infrastructure, and set up systems that can be used for years to come to plan the garden year to year.
