Detroit Shoreway CDC Community Outreach VISTA

The Detroit Shoreway Community Outreach VISTA will help DSCDO realize our vision of the Southwest Detroit Shoreway Plan. The plan itself features four primary goals: (1) Make Safe Spaces for Kids, (2) Create a Sense of Place, (3) Revitalize Lorain Avenue, and (4) Address Safety & Maintenance Concerns. While the plan is varied in its goals and objectives, a primary VISTA responsibility will be to help DSCDO’s Community Involvement staff employ alternative community engagement techniques. Ultimately through improved engagement, the role of the VISTA will be to connect Southwest Detroit Shoreway residents with economic empowerment programs and opportunities such as Hire Local, El Barrio job training, Community Financial Centers counseling, or Earned Income Tax Credit preparation – all of which are programs that DSCDO currently offers or partners offer. Levels of engagement in Southwest Detroit Shoreway have traditionally been low. Many residents express feelings of isolation and disconnection from growth in other parts of the neighborhood, such as the Gordon Square Arts District. There is no existing block club in the area. While resources are abundant and local employment is on the rise, DSCDO has not been sufficiently equipped to connect with and empower Southwest Detroit Shoreway residents. Using the momentum of the Southwest Detroit Shoreway Plan and the organization’s renewed focus on that area, the VISTA will play an invaluable role as part of our team – cultivating leaders, facilitating valuable information to residents through focus and intention, and infusing the area with a new optimism about its future.
