60+ Ride Community Outreach and Development VISTA

60+ Ride’s office is located in Greeley, Colorado, and provides transportation to Weld County seniors 60 and older free of charge, regardless of income, offering them the opportunity to continue living independently while maintaining physical, emotional, and mental health. 60+ Ride is at a critical juncture. Demand is dictating that we expand both the number of clients our programs serve and the geographical area those programs reach to meet the needs of the exploding 60+ demographic. There is added challenge in the fact that Weld County covers 4,017 square miles, most of it rural. To accomplish this, we are focused on increasing public visibility and awareness of the aging population’s needs, the importance of 60+ Ride in meeting those needs, fundraising capacity, and the number of volunteer drivers providing direct services. While the poverty level in both the Greeley and Carbon Valley areas is more than sufficient to warrant our presence, there is even greater need for health care access assistance in the more rural areas where transportation options are limited and the poverty and education levels more challenging. Our program transports Weld County seniors to destinations including medical appointments, grocery stores, financial and government institutions, houses of worship, social events, and personal grooming appointments. The Colorado State Demographer’s Office is forecasting the aging population to grow another 68% by 2030, and Weld’s is growing even more quickly. 60+ Ride had 729 clients enrolled at the end of 2015 and currently has 925 with 8205 rides given in 2018. We are currently averaging more than one new client request per business day, and volunteer recruitment continues to be our greatest ongoing challenge.

Member Duties : 60+ Ride has critical projects waiting to be built and implemented with the help of our Community Outreach and Development VISTA, each of which would have a significant impact on our ability to expand the geographic area we reach and the number of vulnerable older adults we serve. Those projects include increasing volunteer numbers through networking and publicity in rural Weld County and working with staff and a dynamic volunteer planning committee to organize, plan, market, and present our annual “Ride & Revel!” cycling event on Saturday, July 18, 2020. The 60+ Ride Community Outreach and Development VISTA will be an integral part of our team as we plan and implement projects imperative to growing the capacity of our small non-profit and lift residents out of poverty through transportation resources.
