CCMA Building Economic Opportunity and Volunteer Capacity

Based at the University of Maryland SAFE Center for Human Trafficking Survivors (SAFE Center), the CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will help build the capacity of the SAFE Center to serve human trafficking victims in the metropolitan Washington, DC area, with a focus on Maryland’s Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. Human trafficking survivors are among the most marginalized, poverty-stricken, and disenfranchised members of society. The SAFE Center is the only service provider located in Prince George’s County that provides comprehensive services for victims of sex and labor trafficking regardless of age, gender, or nationality. Year 3 of this project will build on the progress made in Year 2 by continuing to develop and operationalize our volunteer and economic empowerment programs. Specifically, with regard to the Economic Empowerment Program, the project will continue to perfect and manage the English Language Partner Program and assess its effectiveness in supporting clients and sustaining student volunteers. It will also organize an in-house economic empowerment workshop related to financial literacy, adult education, and/or job readiness; form partnerships with vocational training and workforce development programs in D.C., Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County; complete the client economic empowerment needs assessment and finalize the economic empowerment program forms and protocols. Finally, the program will continue to reach out to professionals to provide employment advice, mentorship, and internship experiences to UMD SAFE Center clients. With regard to the Volunteer Program, the CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA project will further develop the SAFE Center’s capacity to recruit volunteers and interns for projects involving interpretation and translation services, crisis intervention, and research.
