CCMA UMB CEC Emerging Leaders Academy

Emerging Leaders Academy (ELA) at University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) Community Engagement Center (CEC) will prepare young people (ages 12-16) from low income, largely African American households in Southwest Baltimore for civic, career, and college readiness. During this three-year project, the CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will research, design, implement, revise, and assess a curriculum that emphasizes service learning, community organizing, and racial equity. The CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will recruit and support an initial cohort of preteens and teens who will advise on program development; then the teens will be trained in the subject areas. This cohort of teens will then move into leadership positions facilitating subsequent ELA cohorts. UMB is Maryland's only public health, law, and human services university. Six professional schools and a Graduate School confer the majority of health care, human services, and law professional degrees in Maryland each year. UMB’s mission is to improve the human condition and serve the public good of Maryland and society at large through education, research, clinical care, and service. As a public urban university and one of Baltimore’s most powerful anchor institutions, UMB is dedicated to improving health, creating wealth, and advancing social justice in the neighborhoods nearest our campus. In fall 2015, under the leadership of UMB President Jay A. Perman, MD, the University crossed MLK Boulevard and opened the Community Engagement Center (CEC), a shared space providing services that promote neighborhood and economic development in West Baltimore’s Poppleton/Hollins Market neighborhood.
