Downtown Renton Community Development Specialist

Part of an eight-member VISTA team supported by a VISTA Leader. This VISTA member will serve with the City of Renton and focus on using community development and engagement as a tool for combatting poverty in Downtown Renton, a diverse and economically disadvantaged area in the urban center. The City of Renton (incorporated in 1901; current population 104,100) is the lead organization for the Downtown Civic Core Plan. During the project’s first year, the VISTA member will work toward building capacity and sustainability in the community by building rapport and trust with neighborhood residents and businesses to foster connections, identify community needs, and work together to combat poverty and improve the quality of life in the neighborhood. The VISTA member will work with residents, businesses, and other partners to identify, plan, and implement community events, activities, and small-scale neighborhood improvement projects. This will help break the cycle of poverty by strengthening the social fabric of the community, as well as improving the ability of low-income residents to work together address their own needs and respond to emerging issues. The VISTA member’s community development efforts will help improve neighborhood image and safety and cultivate neighborhood pride to combat blight, crime, and other challenges of concentrated poverty. The VISTA member will also write grants to support small-scale neighborhood improvement projects that can be executed with residents on a grassroots level. Through these efforts, the VISTA member will work toward building greater resilience and self-sufficiency among neighborhood residents and businesses and expanding opportunities for everyone in the community. Renton is located on Lake Washington and has excellent parks for outdoor activities and outstanding access to public transportation to Seattle and other parts of the Seattle metropolitan area.
