Community Impact Coordinator - United Way of the Midlands
One of the best ways to escape poverty is through education. United Way of the Midlands is recruiting a VISTA member to support UWM’s efforts to address school absenteeism. Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, puts students at risk academically and is a primary predictor of poor academic performance, and school drop-out. You will be a part of community change where you will: • Expand the reach of our Attendance Awareness Campaign with a focus on expanding our digital presence; • Enhance capacity building of the School-Based Attendance Coalition by promoting awareness, identifying training and professional development needs, and building partnerships; • Help plan and execute key events like outreach activities, community kickoffs and a conference; and • Walk away from this role with a strong knowledge of community impact initiatives and systems change, while investing in your own personal development. About Us: United Way of the Midlands (UWM) is a fundraising and community impact organization that helps individuals and families break the cycle of poverty. We achieve our mission through advocacy, leadership and support for nonprofit organizations that help our vulnerable neighbors meet their basic needs and address the root causes of poverty through investments in local non-profits. We work with more than 58 local nonprofit partners to serve 140,000 people annually. UWM is located in the Omaha-Council Bluffs community, a growing metro area of over 900,000 people that offers a thriving arts, food, sports and music scene and a culture of Midwestern generosity and friendliness. Unfortunately, 104,000 people in our community live in poverty and concentrated poverty has been increasing over time. This is a trend that we want to see change in our community.
