Cornerstone - New Day Services (Fort Worth)

NewDay serves fractured families & their children encountered through the Family & Juvenile Courts and Child Welfare Systems. NewDay places them on a path that leads to healing by providing them with the necessary tools to rebuild their lives. Ultimately, children are at the heart of every NewDay program. NewDay has identified families & children impacted by family disruption (divorce, separation, abuse, neglect, poverty). Through the courts & through Child Protective Services (CPS), staff & Chaplains meet with fragmented families, juveniles in trouble with the law, fathers delinquent in child support, families facing the possibility of losing custody of their children, & children who feel alone & confused over the separation of their parents. In 2010, a field study on the FOCUS (Father’s Offering Children Unfailing Support) program indicated that fathers who attended FOCUS paid twice as much support than previously had been paid & had more interaction with their children. For the Juvenile Justice Center, the Tarrant County Juvenile Services 2009 Annual Report states, “The total number of felony referrals decreased by 24% from 2000 to 2009. In the last five years (2005-2009), the total number of felony referrals decreased by 18%. From 2008 to 2009, the total number of felony referrals decreased by 11%. All of this occurred since the implementation of the Character Counts Program by NewDay at the Juvenile Justice Center in 2002. Most CPS removals are children who have been removed from the mothers. NewDay provides engagement with the fathers & paternal kin to provide case workers with possible alternative family members that are suitable placements, thus reducing the time a child stays in foster care. The VISTA volunteer will address the barrier of financial sustainability for NewDay so that services can continue and grow. The position is located at 6816 Camp Bowie Blvd, West, Suite 112, Fort Worth, TX 76116. Pay rate is $946 per month BEFORE taxes.

Member Duties : The VISTA will enable NewDay to sustain the groundwork needed to capture data that better measures its impact on individuals & the community. In 2014-2015, NewDay embarked on an evidence-based evaluation of its programs. The research leader for this project is a professor of Criminal Justice for Tarrant Community College & Texas Christian University in partnership with the Research Dept at Dallas Baptist University. The VISTA will work with this team to help NewDay understand how to develop better databases & capture needed information. The VISTA will also help the Programs Director evaluate the effectiveness & impact of the program data collected during the various stages of implementation over the year. Through the VISTA Project, NewDay will be able to validate its programs & grow sustainable funds through the reporting of program successes to the Criminal Probation Dept, federal government funding streams, foundations & other organizations with similar successful programs.
