CCMA MICA & BDS Library & Access Project

The MICA / BDS Literacy and Access Project is a partnership between the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and the Baltimore Design School (BDS) and was created due to a shared commitment to the improvement of educational opportunities and access to MICA for Baltimore City students at BDS. There are two main components of this partnership: The first includes developing the BDS library as a literacy hub within the school and the community, and working to ensure the sustainability of the project for the long term. The second is to help to bridge the gap and shift the perception of MICA by strategically pioneering ways for BDS students to be exposed to opportunities at MICA, in turn creating access ways for all Baltimore city students. Over the course of the three year project, the CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will serve as the liaison between both institutions, coordinating communications and planning around specific joint projects that are a part of this plan, provide ongoing support and assistance to convert the BDS library into a functioning literacy hub, ensuring long-term sustainability for the library project and finally, work to develop programming that connects BDS students to opportunities at MICA. The BDS/MICA VISTA will be based primarily at BDS, but will also have access to a workspace at MICA and will be expected to spend time at both locations, as well as at sites in Baltimore.

Member Duties : The library will be opening for BDS student use in spring 2019. The CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA will focus efforts on building a sustainable tutoring program for our middle and high school students, with a focus on math & reading. This will entail building new community partnerships. The primary focus of this project will broaden the frame to think about creative ways for BDS students to have better access and personal connections to MICA. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will be responsible for brainstorming and executing programming for BDS students to have ongoing exposure to MICA & its resources. Though both partnering institutions have suggestions to get our students better access to MICA, we also want to make sure we include student perspectives as well. To do this successfully, the CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will conduct student surveys about ideas for working with MICA as a partner. The CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will plan listening sessions with BDS students to collect information.
