Piast; Education and Reduction of Opioid Use Initiative
The Piast Institute is a research and service non-profit organization that provides social, cultural, community and capacity building services to the various ethnic, social groups of Hamtramck and its envisions. We will be focusing our efforts on increasing the awareness of the dangers of opioids and prevention of opioid use disorders. The Piast Institute established and is the fiduciary to the Hamtramck Drug Free Community Coalition (HDFCC) in 2006. HDFCC was created to serve the inner city area of Hamtramck and the ZIP code 48212, in which Hamtramck is located, which has a population of 38,133 (Hamtramck: 23,234). The seventh largest immigrant and racial groups in the service area are Bangladeshi, Yemeni Arab, Polish, Ukrainian, Bosnian and African American. The HDFCC has been actively involved in substance abuse prevention in our target area since 2006. Currently, HDFCC has become concerned about the opioid crisis and is building a campaign to to educate the community. This past summer HDFCC offered seminars to seniors in the area on prescription use and abuse, STDs, AIDS and other health issues. Because of the long term chronic health issues facing our aging population, they are more likely to be prescribed opioids. HDFCC wants to employ VISTA members to increase the outreach to our senior citizens and other marginalized populations to build prevention awareness of the opioid crisis and how it impacts their lives and their community. Small focus groups will be scheduled to share information and to gather data on community members’ attitudes and beliefs regarding opioid use with an audience response system. The systems provide anonymity to all participants, allowing us to gather data that is accurate, standardized and consistent.
