CCMA Terp Farm

The Terp Farm is UMD’s sustainable vegetable farm which serves as a living laboratory. Terp Farm grows vegetables with the help of students and donates a portion of each harvest. The Terp Farm is seeking the support of a CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA to establish a produce gleaning program and build the capacity for meaningful connections with the broader community. Terp Farm will turn its focus to the social dimensions of sustainability: fighting hunger, empowering low-income youth and adults, fostering community, & advancing leadership skills. The position will support three main goals. The first is to establish the UMD Produce Gleaning Program working with Farming4Hunger and the Capital Area Food Bank as key stakeholders and models. The CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will formalize the existing network of stakeholders committed to fighting food waste and food insecurity into the UMD Produce Gleaning Program and launch successful volunteer gleaning events starting in Fall 2019 at the Terp Farm and Upper Marlboro Facility and then expanding. The second goal is to build capacity for the Terp Farm to serve as a resource for community and off-campus collaborations, such as through collaboration with the Accokeek Foundation’s Agricultural Conservation Corps Program (AFACCP) and Prince George’s County Food Equity Council. The CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will strengthen existing partner collaborations by coordinating opportunities for high school participants in the AFACCP to interact with Terp Farm’s UMD students. Finally, the CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will empower students and community members, specifically low-income adults, through applying the Youth Outreach model developed by Farming4Hunger for leadership training and life-sharing to UMD. The CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA member will develop a comprehensive program manual and coordinate leadership and life-sharing workshops with Farming4Hunger available on campus and/or at Terp Farm.
