LCCT: VISTA Vol. & Dev. Coor.@ Partners in Parenting

Partners in Parenting (PIP)’s mission is to build a village for all new parents. Our proven approach connects parents of babies with peers, trained facilitators, and experts so they can share the joy and weather the storms of new parenthood together. We believe that healthy families raise healthy children, and that thriving families are the foundation of strong communities. By helping Austin’s parents thrive, we help our entire community thrive. PIP is a proud member of the PEPS Network, a program of the highly successful Program for Early Parent Support (PEPS) in Seattle, Washington. Over the past 35 years PEPS has developed a nationally-recognized direct-service model of peer support groups for new parents. As a member of the PEPS Network, PIP receives program materials, mentoring and valuable data to effectively deliver peer support to families in Austin. PIP organizes neighborhood-based peer groups for first-time parents. Each week for 10 weeks, groups of 6-12 new parents and their babies convene in a group member’s home. With the help of a trained facilitator and PIP’s comprehensive curriculum, new mothers and fathers develop the skills they need to be effective and nurturing parents. The facilitator guides discussion and provides participants with resources related to a range of infant health, child development and parenting issues that focus on subjects including sleep, feeding, early learning, and postpartum mood disorders. Our curriculum was established from the research-based Strengthening Families™, which outlines five protective factors of family wellness proven to increase attachment, foster healthy brain development and lay the foundation for early learning. To date, PIP has served 308 families including 101 so far in 2018. We have served 33 zip codes in Austin and have a goal to serve 500 families annually by 2020.
