LCCT: VISTA Development and Comm@American YouthWorks

American YouthWorks connects young people with tools and resources we all need to reach career goals and achieve academic success. AYW programs build leadership skills, connection with community, and prepare young people with skills needed to enter the workforce with a strong work ethic and sense of service. Our innovative programming connects young people to career pathways and greater sense of purpose while serving others. American YouthWorks' two primary programs are YouthBuild Austin and AYW Conservation Corps. YouthBuild Austin connects opportunity youth ages 16-24 with education and careers in the most in-demand sectors of local economy: IT, Healthcare, and Green Construction. Our research-based programming combines academics, vocational training, support services and guidance to employment and post-secondary education. AYW Conservation Corps maintain national parks and recreational areas across the Central Southern U.S. The Conservation crew members are also trained in Disaster Response and are deployed by FEMA to rebuild communities impacted by natural disasters like the recent Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. ServeAustin Collaborative was formed in 2015 by the local AmeriCorps organizations that provide direct service to low-income youth and adults in Central Texas (Literacy First, Literacy Coalition of Central Texas, American Youthworks, Communities in Schools of Central Texas, College Forward, Breakthrough Central Texas, Front Steps, and 4-H Capital). The initial goals of the Collaborative were to work collectively to increase awareness of national service opportunities and augment the number service year applicants, as well as to grow positive outcomes for residents of Central Texas long-term. Over time, the Collaborative has worked together to reduce the challenges of recruiting young adults to engage in service and to provide more support and resources to members and engage more local and diverse corps in service year experiences.
