Statewide Public Health Preparedness VISTA
 
 
 
This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. The Oregon Health Authority is at the forefront of lowering and containing costs, improving quality and increasing access to health care in order to improve the lifelong health of Oregonians. The Oregon Public Health Division works to protect and promote the health of all Oregonians and the places we live, work, play, learn and age. The Oregon public health system includes federal, state and local agencies, private organizations and other diverse partners working together to put healthy options and health-promoting services within reach for everyone in Oregon. Oregon needs a strong public health system to achieve better health and better care at lower costs. Public health plays an important role in Oregon’s health system transformation. This VISTA position is with the Health Security, Preparedness and Response Program. The mission of the HSPR Program is to develop public health systems to prepare for and respond to major and acute threats and emergencies that impact the health of people in Oregon. We collaborate with Oregon Emergency Management and our local, regional and national Emergency Management partners. This position is located in Portland, which is Oregon’s cultural center, dense with independent movie theaters and art galleries. The exceptional public transit system makes it easy to get around the city without a car, no matter if you’re visiting a food cart pod or a public park. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Portland is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.

Member Duties : This VISTA position is a part of a health equity and emergency preparedness initiative that aims to include the voices of low-income and vulnerable populations in statewide public health planning and response efforts. The VISTA member will: • Build capacity among local public health, Healthcare Preparedness Program coalitions and community-based organizations to incorporate the needs of low-income and disproportionately affected populations in public health emergency management. • Develop risk communication strategies to enable people to make informed decisions to protect their health. • Integrate the needs of disproportionately affected populations into the state-level public health emergency response structure. • Develop training and exercises for state staff and local partners to understand the needs of low-income and vulnerable populations in disasters.
