Strong City/Club at Collington Square Outreach & Development

This position is sponsored by Strong City Baltimore in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with The Club at Collington Square in Baltimore, MD. The Club is an after-school and summer program currently serving over 90 children in East Baltimore. Through homework support and project-based learning opportunities, The Club staff reinforces day-school learning through interactive hands-on learning. Since the program began in 2001, The Club has provided academic and enrichment programming to youth in the Collington Square area. The Club has built an extraordinary after-school program in East Baltimore amidst one of the most poverty-stricken neighborhoods in Baltimore. The program is built upon best practices to build learners and leaders, with incredible year-to-year retention and attendance rates. However, the program does not have the capacity to build sustainable tools to ensure that the program is able to survive into the future and best serve the learners that pass through The Club. An AmeriCorps VISTA member would help build up sustainability systems at The Club, particularly evaluation and tracking tools, in order to help The Club’s staff better understand the needs of the scholars and to help show the successes that the program has had. Strong City sponsors 20 VISTA projects at nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, Strong City's mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. Strong City will provide support to Baltimore Teacher Supply Swap and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, resources, and professional development opportunities, and meetings.

Member Duties : This VISTA project will work with The Club and Strong City staff to develop program sustainability systems in order to ensure the long-term viability of The Club. The creation of these systems will help the program operate more effectively. These systems fall under three broad areas: 1) Scholar achievement tracking – The program has the opportunity to build a robust system to ensure that the scholars receive the services that they need, as well as recognizing the accomplishments of the program. 2) Resource Guide – Over the years, The Club has built a wide network of partnerships and connections to try to bring in all of the necessary resources to The Club. This document would also be helpful to The Club’s staff that may need to refer scholars or their families for other resources. 3) Marketing and Fundraising – The program has an opportunity to grow their capacity in social media support, creation of marketing materials, and individual donor fundraising planning.
