Grow Ohio Valley

[We will accept applications on a rolling basis and the start date will be dependent upon when we find the right candidate.] Grow Ohio Valley’s vision is to achieve regional food security: access to safe, nutritious and affordable food for all people. The Grow Ohio Valley (GOV) public market space, addressing the food desert that currently exists in downtown Wheeling, will allow residents to purchase locally sourced, fresh food right in the downtown area - anytime of the year. This public market space will use a unique business model that allows local farmers to keep a larger share of the profits earned. The permanent market will offer double value to SNAP/EBT shoppers, further encouraging these health-oriented trends in low-income populations. Currently, all of downtown Wheeling is spanned by three USDA census tracts. East Wheeling is served only by convenience stores. Partnerships with healthcare professionals and educators, as well as low-income and regular customer segments, improve community well-being through education and outreach. As the health of low-income individuals improves, they miss fewer days of work, have better school attendance and perform better in general, not to mention reduced medical requirements. Without fresh food access, these individuals risk entering a downward spiral of diet-related disease, mounting healthcare costs, and inescapable poverty. The market, combined with additional sales/distribution efforts, can propel the community out of poverty in a lasting and sustainable manner. This will be the 2nd year of this VISTA project and the position will be directly supervised by the former VISTA, giving the position a seamless transition as the market sets to open in May. For more information, read the former VISTA's blog post about this project: http://wvhub.org/it-is-powerful-to-participate-in-systems-to-sustain-enduring-change-eleanor-marshall-on-being-a-vista/
