Strong City/ Maryland Food Bank Garden Development VISTA
 
 
 
This position is sponsored by Strong City Baltimore in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with the Maryland Food Bank in Baltimore, MD. This multi-year project will build pathways out of poverty through garden-focused nutrition education that supports community, builds skills, and promotes healthy lifestyles. The focal point of this project is a volunteer-run, raised-bed garden with an outdoor gathering place at the main office of Maryland Food Bank, located at 2200 Halethorpe Farms Road, Baltimore, Maryland. The garden education program will be open to end-users of the Maryland Food Bank’s network of community food distribution partners , to volunteers, and to the community, including, but not limited to, K-12 students, college students, and community groups. The goal of the garden/nutrition education project is to provide a transformational learning experience that emphasizes the impact of a healthy diet, teaches gardening skills, and provides instruction on how to create gardens in a variety of small space environments. Participants will be able to apply these skills to their home, community, and/or partner agency (e.g., food pantry, shelter, soup kitchen). Strong City sponsors 20 VISTA projects at nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, Strong City's mission is to build and strengthen neighborhoods and people. Strong City will provide support to Baltimore Teacher Supply Swap and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, resources, and professional development opportunities, and meetings.

Member Duties : The goal of this project is to create a sustainable garden education program that serves individuals, schools, the community, and any of our 1,100 partner organizations. VISTA will create policies and procedures that ensure the sustainable operation of the program. 1. Plan and coordinate building of physical garden space, consisting of 3-4 raised beds and one garden shed. 2. Create and implement systems for garden operations and supervision, including: recruiting and training volunteers, multi-year and multi-season volunteer schedules, training protocols, food safety policies and occupational safety training. 3. Document, communicate and evaluate program activities; provide quarterly written descriptions of program activities; compile and provide analysis of results for the purpose of continual improvement and long term sustainability of program.
