Big Brothers Big Sisters Media Summer Associate

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grand Island’s mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships with measurable impact. BBBS recruits, trains, and retains community volunteers to be matched with children ages 5 through 18. BBBS, located in Grand Island, NE, provides services for children in Hall, Hamilton, Howard, and Merrick Counties. BBBSGI has two programs: the Community-Based Program and the School-Based Program. The Community-Based Program matches adult mentors with children ages 5 through 18. Matches within this program are encouraged to meet for at least one hour weekly within the community. Our goal is to maintain these matches for at least one full year. The School-Based Program matches high school students who are at least 16 years old with an elementary school student enrolled within the same school district. Matches within this program are encouraged to meet one time weekly at the elementary school student’s school. Our goal is to maintain these matches for at least one full school year. All BBBS matches are supported by a professionally trained program coordinator and are encouraged to attend our monthly match support activities. In 2016, BBBSGI served 100 children in these two programs. Children in successful long-term matches are more likely to graduate from high school, less likely to skip school, and less likely to begin using illegal drugs or alcohol. These children are also more likely to avoid risky behavior and demonstrate increased knowledge and skills related to building and sustaining healthy relationships with other people. These outcomes benefit all areas of the child’s life.
