Stewards VISTA: Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy
Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) serves approximately 35 neighborhoods through its stewardship of parklands in the Jamaica Bay watershed and Rockaway peninsula. JBRPC seeks to improve access and create systems for sustained stewardship of parks throughout Jamaica Bay and the Rockaways so that parks can contribute to the social, ecological, economic, and health benefits parks are capable of; and be more resilient for future and more frequent storms. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will support JBRPC programs that will help local parks deliver these benefits to residents and visitors, with a primary focus on developing programs that will positively benefit lower income residents. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will support three primary program areas for the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy: (1) Update and maintain JBRPC’s Jamaica Bay and Rockaway Projects Mapping Tool in partnership with non-profit and governmental organizations; (2) Identify grants that will support and fund green jobs for parks maintenance, with a focus on youth from low-income communities; and (3) Support nature-based and environmental education programming, and the development of early childhood engagement in Jamaica Bay and the Rockaways by working with partners to develop a Jamaica Bay/Rockaway/National Park Service focused curriculum, engaging future generations in the sustained stewardship of some of New York City’s most precious urban natural resources. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will work with governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations in the program areas described above. Combined, these three program areas will contribute to community growth including improved public parks and public access, an increase in green job opportunities within the community we serve, and engagement of young people in our parks and the importance of park stewardship at an early age.
