Stewards VISTA: Old Slater Mill Association

Our DOI/VISTA project is designed to work with the diverse communities of Pawtucket, Central Falls, and Providence, RI and see how the residents of those communities can take an active role in the planning and creation of a new National Park. The park celebrates the beginnings of the American Industrial Revolution, and immigrant labor played, and continues to play a major role in that story. We want current immigrant residents of these communities to help us to share and save their stories, as the most recent generation of immigrants to the region. We hope that current immigrant residents will see how they fit into this nationally significant story, and add their voices to it. We also want to find ways to make everyone feel welcomed and appreciated at the park. Furthermore, the park includes a section of the Blackstone River Bikeway, and other recreational opportunities both with the urban core, and the adjacent suburbs. We are looking to create increased access to recreational opportunities for urban and economically-disadvantaged residents of communities adjacent to the park which, according to the above statistics, will have a direct positive impact on the overall health of the nearby residents.
