Serve New York VISTA 2019-2020: Grassroots Gardens WNY

Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures for the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Bath, Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : Grassroots Gardens WNY began as a small, volunteer led organization in 2010, with a network of roughly 30 gardens. Since 2010 GGWNY has expanded its network to over 100 gardens and now includes programming focused on capacity building, community organizing and environmental justice as well as food access and nutrition. In 2017, Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo merged with Greenprint Niagara to form Grassroots Gardens WNY, expanding our community-driven model to the City of Niagara Falls. Through our community gardens, food insecurity will continue to be addressed through increased capacity for food production, including the sourcing and distribution of materials. The VISTA team member will focus on building our Niagara Falls network through expanding strategic partnerships and creating a plan for strategic community engagement and outreach efforts. They will also expand the donor database and market new programming via social media.
