Serve New York VISTA 2019: University District CDA

Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures for the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Bath, Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : The University District Community Development Association (UDCDA) is a full service agency offering a wide array of youth and senior service programs to residents out of the Gloria J. Parks Community Center while also spearheading community and housing development projects throughout Buffalo’s Northeast. We work with residents, block clubs, nonprofits, educational institutions, and local government to invest resources in the people and places that matter most to our community. The AmeriCorps VISTA’s role with the organization will include: conducting a commercial district needs assessment, a corridor-specific business association model that addresses community needs and commercial sustainability, and facilitate two sets of workshops - one focused on financial literacy for low-income, minority residents with an interest in entrepreneurship and another focused on business and community leadership development.
