Serve New York VISTA 2019: Teach for America

Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures for the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Bath, Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : Teach For America recruits outstanding and diverse leaders to become TFA “corps members.” Corps members commit to teaching for two years in a low-income community, where they're employed by local schools and confront both the challenges and joys of expanding opportunities for kids. In Buffalo, Teach For America corps members teach in Buffalo Public Schools, where 79% of students are economically disadvantaged and creates a pipeline of leaders into the highest needs classrooms to do whatever it takes to improve student outcomes. This VISTA member would work to engage, retain and manage community partners and corps alumni. They would test systems for volunteer tracking and management, implement the chosen system, and track engagement to increase long term capacity.
