Serve New York VISTA 2019: The Foundry

Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures for the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Bath, Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : The Foundry is an education space and business incubator on Buffalo’s East Side. We believe creating opportunities for self sufficiency and economic stability promotes a healthier community and thus focus on youth education (STEAM classes, job training, career exploration), community education (shared workshops, DIY classes), and business incubation (mentoring, workspace, business classes). The VISTA member would be responsible for enhancing The Foundry’s education and entrepreneurship programs that have been created in the last few years by focusing on developing systems for recruiting and retaining volunteers and soliciting in-kind donations of materials and tools. The VISTA member’s duties would consist of conducting outreach, preparing documents, recruiting volunteers, and working with the Executive Director to develop and implement a volunteer appreciation and retention plan.
