Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures for the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Bath, Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : LawNY is a not-profit law firm providing civil legal assistance to low-income clients in a fourteen-county region in the Finger Lakes and Western New York State. The VISTA member will combat poverty through helping reduce the rate of tax foreclosures in each county by conducting strategic outreach and education to low income homeowners. This VISTA will work to develop self-help tools including a guide for individuals going through the emergency assistance application process. The VISTA member will assist in the planning and executing of clinics to educate homeowners facing tax foreclosures, bankruptcies, and other barriers to home ownership. In addition, this VISTA member will assist in identifying and applying for funding opportunities that will increase our capacity to serve individuals at threat of losing their homes due to financial reasons.
