Opportunity Council-DVSAS-Prevention & Health Ed. VISTA YR2

The mission of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services (DVSAS) is to support individuals affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, and sexual exploitation and to lead the community towards ending these abuses of power. No matter what their circumstances, every person deserves to feel safe, supported and heard. When we talk about individuals affected by domestic violence or sexual assault, we’re talking about every one of us. Our children’s groups are offered during support groups and during the week for drop-in hours. The groups focus on increasing the resiliency skills of children by allowing them play in a safe, child-appropriate environment while increasing social skills, learning positive conflict resolution, and processing their own difficult feelings. Our interactive violence prevention programs are offered at local middle schools, high schools, and youth organizations. These programs help teens understand the dynamics of abusive and healthy relationships, explore consent, and develop confidence in setting boundaries. Elementary Prevention education is a new project that a VISTA member would be able to help pilot - what an exciting time to be involved!

Member Duties : This project has 3 main objectives that a VISTA member will work towards. -Develop and enhance children and family health education programs and curriculum using feedback from foundational research (collected during the previous VISTA year) and within evidence-based best practices in order to support families on their way out of violence and poverty. This includes materials for our health education programs and volunteer trainings. -Develop and enhance our prevention education programs using data gathered by the previous VISTA in order to increase healthy child and youth outcomes. This includes going to schools K - 12 to support staff delivering prevention education and make observations that can inform future change. -Develop and enhance our child advocacy services at our safe shelter to foster resilience through this transition in their lives. This includes enhancing the connection system for shelter families to child advocacy services and enhancing the child playroom.
