*MTCC AmeriCorps Leader - Rocky Mountain College

In Billings and the Yellowstone County poverty rate rose to 12.3% in 2013 and the largest group in poverty is kids under 18; the free and reduced lunch rate for Yellowstone County rose to 38.7% in 2016. The mission of Rocky Mountain College Office of Community Engagement is to encourage lifelong dedication to community service and shared responsibility. One of the ways we intend to carry forth that mission is to develop an AmeriCorps team that will focus on the College’s initiatives towards improving College Access, College Positive Mentoring and K-12 Student Success. Currently we offer programming through Bears and Cubs, reading clinics, the NAIA Champions of Character program as well as required service activities; with the AmeriCorps team we hope to elevate, streamline and popularize programs that work with elementary age students while keeping Rocky’s commitment to being an engaged neighbor. Through our partnership with Rose Park Elementary School we hope to inspire children of all grade levels and socio-economic backgrounds to graduate and pursue their dreams. The AmeriCorps team will provide various opportunities for Rocky students to mentor and inspire elementary age students while learning about the value of civic engagement. Through the Bears and Cubs program of one on one mentoring the team will enhance the programming to focus on college access using college student mentors. The team will support the identified needs of the elementary school by providing mentors; as well as activities with various academic programs; food pantry and personal hygiene product support. The AmeriCorps team will host multiple service projects with youth working to improve and refine projects for long term sustainability.
